Citizens Academy

Our Fall 2015 workshops are at capacity.
We are currently accepting applications for the Spring 2016 Citizens Academy.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and Training Academy is pleased to provide citizens an opportunity to learn more about the CMPD and our services to the community.
Several years ago we redesigned our Citizens Academy program to a format that would be more flexible for our citizens.  Under the new format, the workshops are divided into individual sessions that are offered twice throughout the year. Most of the workshops are classified as Community Education Workshops. Citizens are invited to register for as many of the Community Education Workshops that they are interested in and able to attend. There are practical sessions that are only for citizens who have applied for and have been accepted into the Citizens Academy Program.  In order to graduate from the Citizens Academy Program a participant must complete the required workshops within a two-year time limit. Citizens over 18 who live in Mecklenburg County can register for workshops or apply for the program, and once approved, begin attending at any time throughout the year. We believe this new format has allowed more citizens the opportunity to participate in this community education program.
By attending the workshops citizens will have an opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look at the services of the CMPD from a diverse group of police department personnel.  Some of the features include tours of our Training Academy, Crime Lab and 911 Communications Room. Topics that are discussed include the history of the CMPD, Officer Recruitment, Officer Use of Force, Defensive Tactics, Crime Prevention, Traffic Enforcement and Criminal Investigations. Workshops are held on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at various Police Department buildings.
We are looking forward to the workshops as an opportunity for citizens to gain a greater understanding of our mission and service to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community. Please do not hesitate to contact us at the Training Academy should you have any questions.   You can reach us at 704-432-1655 or by email at
We are looking forward to your participation.
