An important aspect of our training program is for our dogs to have the opportunity to enjoy off leash play time either with other dogs or with people. Off leash play time helps maintain the mental health of our shelter dogs as well as provides them with the additional exercise that is needed.
When the training program started back in February, the idea of a new play yard was proposed and approved quickly. However, we also needed to find a donor to willing to fund the project. Shortly after the idea of a new play yard was approved, I was at an agility trial and ran into some friends I hadn’t seen in awhile. Karen and Fred Parker have been active in the agility community for years and were at the trial with their dogs. Karen mentioned to me that Fred’s company was interested in making a charitable donation to a worthy cause. She said if I knew of anything to let her and Fred know. I told her of our training program at Animal Care and Control and of our need for a new play yard. She took the idea to Fred and he proposed the idea to his company. In less than a week, Fred and his company, PWS International (a Charlotte based company that is a leader in the supply and installation of commercial building products in both the public and private sectors) had sent us a check to cover the cost of the entire project.
Our beautiful new play yard was unveiled for its grand opening August 27th. Our dogs are already enjoying running off leash, rolling in the grass, chasing tennis balls, rough housing with each other and “swimming” in the baby pool. Our deepest thanks and gratitude go to Karen and Fred Parker and PWS International!
