Highway Interdiction Traffic Safety (HITS)

The TRAFFIC HOTLINE is not an emergency line.  It will direct callers to three different areas of assistance.  The caller is given the HITS phone number,  704-336-4465, or the caller may leave a name and number for a return call.

1.  Report a Traffic Violator
The Hotline accepts information about an observed traffic violation that occurred In Mecklenburg County .  The caller must leave the North Carolina registration plate number (out of state registrations not accepted), description of the vehicle, date, time, and location of the violation, and a detailed description of the violation.  Although the caller's identification will not be disclosed, the caller must leave his/her name and telephone number for verification purposes.  This call generates a letter to the registered owner of the vehicle, indicating the concern and possible consequences of the driving behavior. 

2.  Report a Traffic Safety Concern
The Hotline accepts information about any traffic safety concern.  If the concern is validated, it will be handled by HITS or forwarded to the appropriate patrol district.  The caller may leave his/her name and phone number if they would like to speak to an officer.

3.  Report an underage drinking party or
     Talk to someone about any other traffic related matter.      

The HITS unit needs your assistance in locating underage drinking parties. If you are aware of a future event please report this information to the Traffic Hotline. For an event this is occurring at this time call 911 . Alcohol use and abuse by children and adolescents is a long standing, major public health challenge in Mecklenburg County, across the state and the nation. Alcohol possession and consumption by young people raise issues of grave concern that threaten the health, productivity, safety and economic well-being of all citizens.
