The year 2005 was marked by a number of significant achievements and advancements for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD).
In the 2005 Annual Report we highlight some of the achievements that are representative of the kind of work CMPD employees do every day ... solving problems, applying technology to improve operations, partnering with the community to address issues, and using innovative approaches to achieve breakthrough in investigations.
The report also shares some of the challenges facing lo the department. After a decade of decline, crime was up in most categories, gang activity increased, staffing shortages required the department to reexamine how to deploy resources through the divisions, for example.
According to Police Chief Darrel W. Stephens, "The goal of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department is to make Charlotte one of the safest large cities in America. To do that, we will continually advance strategies that prevent crime. We will find ways to engage the community in taking steps that help minimize opportunities for victimization. We will explore appropriate policy direction with the Mayor and City Council. We will seek solutions to the complex community problems that contribute to crime and disorder. And we will enforce the laws and arrest the people who break them."
