Charlotte area Colleges and Universities are growing at a rapid pace, creating an increased demand for off-campus housing and parking options. Single room leases, allowing students to be individually placed in a shared unit, are being provided as a student housing option. These types of uses are not currently defined by the City of Charlotte Zoning Ordinance and are not allowed under our current Zoning Ordinance, bringing along with them both zoning and police enforcement issues. Through a stakeholder process including interdepartmental staff, neighborhood leaders, University representatives, and the Police department, staff will study the issues and work to develop regulations to minimize the impacts of student housing and parking.
