GANG PREVENTION COALITION

GraffitiMecklenburg County Area Mental Health, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, and the Community Relations Committee will award $95,000 to local agencies to help eliminate gangs. The Local agencies selected include:

  • Charlotte Boxing Academy
  • Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council
  • Idlewild Elementary School        
  • McClintock Partners
  • Mi Casa Su Casa
  • Parent University
  • Partners in Out-of-School Time

 

Gang Activity Dramatically Increased

Since 2003, the number of gangs in Charlotte-Mecklenburg has increased by 403 percent, and the number of individual gang members has increased by 206 percent.

Purpose of the GPC

In response to these increases in gang activity, violence and crime, the GPC was established in 2007. The GPC partners with community organizations to eliminate gangs through collaboration, training and technical assistance and aims to:

  • Introduce a communitywide gang reduction plan
  • Mobilize residents to participate in gang reduction activities
  • Educate the community about gangs in Charlotte-Mecklenburg
