Vilma Leake is a Democrat elected to her first term on the Board.
Commissioner Leake, a motivational speaker, was elected to the Charlotte Mecklenburg Board of Education in 1997 and served as vice chair of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) Policy Committee. She resigned from the school board to run for the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners. A retired social studies, sociology and psychology teacher, Commissioner Leake served public schools in North Carolina and Buffalo, NY.

She graduated from Livingstone College with a bachelor's degree and earned a master's degree from the University of Buffalo in New York. She received her principalship certification from UNC-Chapel Hill and has completed all course work for her doctorate at the University of San Francisco.
