Geographic Information System (GIS) Technology combines layers of information concerning a particular area to give people a better understanding of that area. Different layers of information can be combined to tell a "different story".

 

GIS Can Be Used In A Variety Of Ways:

Finding Out Where Things Are

This information helps us find particular places. For example, GIS could be used to help citizens find out where police stations are located throughout the City.

Determining Quantities 

This information helps us find areas with the most and least of a particular characteristic. For example, GIS could be used to locate areas with the least access to computers.

Mapping Densities

This information helps us see the concentration of a particular feature. For example, GIS can tell us which areas have the highest crime rates. This information could be used to plan neighborhood policing. (e.g. http://maps.cmpdweb.org)

Finding Out What Is Near An Area

This information can help us find government buildings/services near us. For example, GIS can be used to help citizens find their nearest neighborhood center.

Mapping Change Over Time

This information can tell us how conditions have changed over time. For example, GIS can be used to determine land development changes in the Charlotte area over the last ten years.
