Sexual Assault Unit
The Sexual Assault Unit investigates all sexual assaults, including but not limited to Rapes, Sexual Assaults, Sexual Battery, Peeping Toms, Indecent Exposure and some other sex related cases. The mission of the unit is to investigate, identify, apprehend  and assist in the prosecution of all suspects. The Sexual Assault Unit takes a proactive approach to the investigation of all cases, utilizing problem solving methods and models in an effort to educate the public to help in the prevention of these crimes.

Personnel

The Sexual Assault Unit is staffed by a Sergeant, an Investigative Technician and seven Detectives. One of these Detectives is assigned to the Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit.  The office is staffed regularly from 7:30am to 9:30pm, Monday through Friday. One detective works on Saturday. Detectives work on a callback basis during overnight hours.

Some Key Definitions of Terms

Forcible Rape
Definition:  The carnal knowledge of a person, forcibly and/or against that person's will or not forcibly or against the person's will in instances where the victim is incapable of giving consent because of his/her temporary or permanent mental or physical incapacity.

Sex Offense
Oral or anal sexual intercourse with another person, forcibly and/or against that person's will or not forcibly or against the person's will in instances where the victim is incapable of giving consent because of his/her youth or because of his/her temporay or permanent mental or physical incapacity.

Sexual Assault With An Object
To use an object or instrument to unlawfully penetrate, however slightly, the genital or anal opening of the body of another person, forcibly and/or against the person's will or not forcibly or against the person's willi in instances where the victim is incapable of giving consent because of his/her youth or because of his/her temporary or permanent mental or physical incapacity.
 
Sexual Battery
The touching of the private body parts of another person for the purpose of sexual gratification, forcibly and/or against that person's will or not forcibly or against the person's will in instances where the victim is incapable of giving consent because of his/her youth or because of his/her temporary or permanent mental or physical incapacity.
