CMPD - Crime Statistics Summary for May 2008
(released June 30, 2008)

Through the end of May, the number of violent Index crimes was 8.4% higher and the number of property Index crimes was 9.7% higher than during the same period last year.

  • Thirty-six cases were classified as criminal homicides by the end of May this year compared
       to 32 in the same period in 2007
  • Robberies were up 9.4%
  • Rape offenses year-to-date decreased by -2.7%
  • Aggravated assaults increased 8.4%
  • While residential burglary was up 13.2%, commercial burglary declined -19.6%
  • Reports of vehicle thefts rose by 6.1%
  • Larceny cases rose by 13.4% through May with the most significant portion of the
       increase in larceny from auto, +27.3% over last year
  • Arson is down by -14.9%
  • Case clearance continues to be ahead of last year –3,981 cases cleared this year compared
       to 3,339 in the same period last year
  • Arrests have increased by 9.0% compared to the first five months of 2007
  • Citations rose 5.3% compared to the number recorded last year. The largest portion
       of that increase was in hazardous traffic citations, up 15.5%
  • Through May this year, 26 fatal traffic crashes resulted in the deaths of 19 vehicle occupants
       and 7 pedestrians
