Report A Crime
When should you call 911 to report a crime or accident?
- Life and death situations
- All traffic accidents
- Medical emergencies
- Someone is injured
- To report a crime:
• That is in progress
• Whether the suspect is still on the scene
• That involves a breaking and/or entering of your home or business
• Any kind of domestic violence issue
• Whether anyone has gotten hurt
- To prevent a crime
- To report a fire
When should you call 311? (when dialing from outside Meckenburg County, call 704.336.7600).
Call 311 anytime you need to reach the CMPD's Crime Reporting Unit. 311 will help you ascertain whether or not a report can be filed and then direct you to the Crime Reporting Unit (CRU). CRU should be contacted anytime:
- If your vehicle has been stolen
- If your property is damaged intentionally or stolen
- If someone had access to your vehicle and they did not return it
- If your car is broken into
- If you are getting harassing telephone calls
- If you have had a threat communicated to you (suspect no longer there)
- If you've been the victim of some type of fraud
- If you've received a worthless check over $2000.00
- If you're the victim of a minor assault
- If you're the victim of Financial Identity Theft
- If you need to add something to a report that has been filed previously
Can you report crime online? Sure! You can now report non-emergency crimes using the Online Reporting System. Instead of calling the Crime Reporting Unit, you can file a report online and your report number will be emailed to you. Online reporting is a convenient way to report:
Breaking and/or Entering of a vehicle
Damage to Property
Financial Identity Fraud
Harassing Telephone Calls
Larceny
