Secondary Employment and Special Events

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department authorizes its police officers to provide law enforcement related services; such as traffic direction and business security in exchange for a fee paid by the employer. Officer Robert Lyons is the Secondary Employment Coordinator and Officer John Ruisi is the Special Events Coordinator.

Officer Ruisi handles all police staffing of special events that require street closings, such as parades, street festivals, charity walks, and foot races. Officer Ruisi will be assigned the event once you have submitted the Parade Permit Application to the City Department of Transportation.

Officer Lyons handles police staffing for all requests that do not involve a street closure, such as security or traffic direction for a business, shopping center, or homeowners association. The Secondary Employment Agreement will provide the necessary information for hiring an off-duty officer. There is a short application that can be faxed or emailed to the Secondary Employment office in order to expedite your request.

For questions, or to schedule an officer please contact the Secondary Employment Office at 704-336-3229. Officer Lyons can be reached via email at rlyons@cmpd.org or at 704-336-2335. Officer Ruisi can be reached via email at jruisi@cmpd.org or at 704-336-2505.
