Managing and acquiring property for our community

The staff of the Real Estate section provides three primary services:  acquisition of property for City projects, surveying and mapping services, and management of the City's real property assets.  The division is organized into the following three sections in order to accomplish this mission.

Real Estate Acquisition
Land is acquired for right-of-ways, easements and encroachment agreements necessary for the successful completion of public projects such as roads, sidewalks, police and fire stations. This team also acquires easements for water and sewer improvements. This process takes place after the planning and design phases of a project are complete. All property acquisition must be complete before construction begins.

Mapping and Surveying
Surveying is performed in order to provide base maps, City limit lines, topographic maps, right-of-way limits, and horizontal and vertical controls for roads and streets. A GIS mapping center provides maps for internal customers within the City and County government.  The public may purchase maps from Mecklenburg County.

Asset Management: Responding to a challenge
Just as it is in the private sector, real property assets have become increasingly important in the public sector. Charlotte is recognized as one of the more innovative cities in the country to strategically manage real property assets in order to benefit the community and meet council-approved policies and objectives.
