Central Avenue Streetscape @ Eastland Mall (on hold)
|
Part of the City's Eastside Strategy Plan
The Central Avenue at Eastland Mall Streetscape Project is on hold until the redevelopment study of Eastland Mall is complete. The delay is intended to avoid demolishing newly-installed streetscape infrastructure impacted by the redevelopment and having to do the work again. Combining this work with the future mall redevelopment will allow for one cohesive project. A related reason to hold the project is potential infrastructure changes associated with possible streetcar service to this area.
City staff will be assessing the condition of sidewalk along Central Avenue adjacent to the Eastland Community Transit Center to determine what interim repairs may be needed until the streetscape project can be completed.

This project is funded through the Charlotte Mecklenburg Planning Commission and will continue the improvements of past streetscape work on Central Avenue in the area of Eastland Mall (Sharon Amity Road to Reddman Road).
This streetscape project will narrow Central Avenue in the area of the mall to match the completed streetscape work in other sections of Central Avenue. The completed project will include landscaped medians which will allow pedestrians to safely cross the street. The work will also include bicycle lanes, widened sidewalks, planting strips and landscaping.
Project Objectives:
- Increased opportunities for landscaping.
- Improvements to both street and sidewalks for increased pedestrian and traffic safety.
- Updated street and pedestrian lighting.

Cost: $4,000,000 Please note that this figure includes all costs associated with the project such as planning and design, acquiring the right of way, utility relocation, consultant fees, construction, signalization, permits and landscaping.
The Engineering & Property Management (E&PM) project team managed the Central Avenue Streetscape Project through a four-stage process.
