Lawing School Road

A Connectivity Project

Lawing School Road is currently a dead end street that ends just before the Northwoods Forest subdivision at Coulwood Subdivision.  This proposed project would connect the stubbed-out street off of Northwoods Forest Drive to Lawing School Road

The proposed new connector street will have curb & gutter and sidewalk.  The connection of Lawing School Road to Northwoods Forest Drive was requested by citizens living in the area.  Field visits indicate that several hundred vehicles are using a dirt path between the two existing roadways each day.  Nearby residents have mentioned that school buses and emergency vehicles use this dirt path as well.

The project would help implement Objective #2.9 of the Transportation Action Plan: "By 2015, the City will maintain its connectivity ratio of 1.45 inside Route 4, and increase its connectivity ratio outside Route 4 to 1.35."

Lawing School Road
This project will connect two neighborhoods and provide a needed link in the roadway system.  Upon completion, both neighborhoods will have a secondary access.  This project may also involve coordination with storm drainage improvement projects and water and sewer line replacement projects.

What's happened?
The project team shared general information at the first public meeting held on May 15, 2008.

What's next? The second public meeting will be held on September 11 at Christ United Methodist Church, 8020 Bellhaven Boulevard from 6:30-8:30pm.

Objectives:

  • Connect two neighborhoods and provide a needed link in the roadway system.  The connection would be a Residential Medium street per the Urban Street Design Guidelines (USDG).
  • Distribute neighborhood traffic accessing Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road.
  • Link residents to complementary land uses such as the Bi-Lo Shopping Center on Bellhaven Boulevard.
  • Use the public involvement process as a significant part of identifying and prioritizing the improvements to be included in the future design. In addition, traffic calming, sidewalk, and/or street lighting may be included based on neighborhood feedback.
  • Coordinate and collaborate selected infrastructure improvements with other City and County proposed projects / activities and funding.
  • Widen a segment of Northwoods Forest Drive between Lawing School Road and Bradley Russell Court to a Residential Medium street per the USDG.

Cost:  $TBD
Please note this figure includes all costs associated with the project such as planning and design, acquiring the right of way, utility relocation, consultant fees, construction, signalization, permits and landscaping.
