HIV and Other Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) or Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are diseases that are spread through anal, oral or vaginal intercourse.  Some STDs such as HIV and Hepatitis B can also be transmitted thrugh a blood contact such as sharing drug injection equipment. See STD fact sheets below for more information.

HIV and other STD testing allows the health department to locate cases and notify contacts of those diagnosed with HIV and syphilis. Along with extensive follow-up, it can ensure that proper treatment is obtained. Working in collaboration with public and private medical providers, services are provided as mandated in public health laws and statutes of North Carolina.
