Small Rodent or Rabbit Bites, Scratches or Exposes a Pet Animal

Small rodents like rats, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, chipmunks, moles, or squirrels and rabbits or hares generally are not suspected of carrying the rabies virus. They will be tested if the biting animal displayed neurological symptoms.  It is not necessary to quarantine an animal bitten by a small rodent.

Recently, gerbils have been tested and found positive for rabies in New York state.  Call the Health Department for consultation on small animal and rodent bites.
