Nutrition Services & Physical Activity Programs

Health educators provide one-on-one and group education and counseling sessions to promote healthy lifestyles from nutrition and exercise to tobacco cessation. The programs offered are designed to improve eating habits and health through education, counseling, training, and online resources.

African-American Churches Eating Smart and Moving More

Description: This program is similar to the Body and Soul Program, however, focuses on general healthy eating where Body and Soul focuses specifically on fruit and vegetable intake. The Program provides guidance on how to establish a Wellness Committee or Health Ministry and tips and ideas on how to create a healthy eating church environment.

Body and Soul: Celebration of Healthy Eating and Living

Description: Body and Soul is a train-the-trainer program designed for churches in the African-American community. The Program provides guidance on how to establish a Wellness Committee or Health Ministry and tips and ideas on how to increase the congregation's fruit and vegetable intake.

Color Me Healthy

Description: A nutrition and physical activity curriculum developed by NC Cooperative Extension at NC State University for use in childcare facilities and preschools. Early Childhood Educators who complete the 4-hour training receive a toolkit full of fun interactive learning opportunities on physical activity and healthy eating.

Cooking Demonstrations

Description: Participants will learn how to prepare nutritious and tasty meals, modify recipes to make them healthy, prepare and cook food with less fat and season food with less salt.

Families Eating Smart and Moving More

Description: This program offers families simple solutions to help them eat smart and move more. It gives families the skills to be able to eat more meals at home, eat healthy when eating out, move more in their everyday routine and watch less television.

Fit City for Fit Families

Description: Fit City for Fit Families combines individual and community action to reduce children's barriers to healthy eating and physical activity. The program builds individual knowledge and skill by providing web-access to credible nutrition and physical activity resources. The program also works with family-friendly businesses to establish policies that create a societal norm for healthy eating options and physical activity opportunities.

Grocery Store Tours

Description: Participants will learn where to find the healthiest foods in the store, how to shop healthy using the food label, where to find hidden fat, sodium, or sugar, which products or brand names are healthier than others, how to spend money wisely but yet nutritiously, and tips on shopping, storing, and cooking the most nutritious foods.

"Hispanos Saludables" -Exercise and Nutrition Program

Description: A 3-month program for Latinos where they learn about nutrition and how to improve their eating habits, begin a regular exercise routine 3 days a week, and improve their body mass index, % body fat, blood pressure, blood sugar, and body weight.

Latino Program

Description: Classes to help Latinos learn about hypertension, cholesterol, diabetes, physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and meal planning.

Nutrition and Physical Activity Self-Assessment for Child Care (NAP SACC)

Description: A statewide program aimed at improving the eating and physical activity environments in North Carolina child care centers. The NAP SACC program helps childcare center staff to identify areas needing improvement in feeding and physical activity and assists them in making these changes.

Mecklenburg County Fruit and Vegetable Coalition

Description: The Coalition was developed in 2005 to address the declining intake of fruits and vegetables. The goal of the Coalition is to increase consumption of fruits and vegetables to more than 5 servings a day by 25% of Mecklenburg County adults by 2010. The current active membership of the Coalition is 70 partners with about a third who are actively involved in projects sponsored by the group. Current activities include increasing the number of local farmer's markets and school gardens in the community.

Promotores de Salud (Lay Health Advisors)

Description: The program uses Promotores (Lay Health Advisors) to teach and mentor Latinos. The Promotores follow a curriculum (usually offered as a series of 4 classes) designed to reduce the risk factors of heart disease.
