Komen Charlotte Awards $1.2 Million in Community Grants

Lifesaving Breast Health Services Provided to Medically Underserved

(Charlotte, NC) April 7, 2009 — A true testament to the impact one organization can have on a community, the Charlotte Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure announced $1.2 million in community grants, its largest grant amount ever! Grants for the fiscal year of April 1, 2009 – March 31, 2010 were awarded to 24 local nonprofit programs offering breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs for the medically underserved residents of Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanly and Union Counties in North Carolina, and York County in South Carolina. A summary of these grants is attached.
 

Komen Charlotte Grantees

In addition to the $1.2 million in local grants, Komen Charlotte awarded $500,000 to support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure National Award and Research Grant Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific programs around the world. Since its establishment in 1997, the Komen Charlotte Affiliate has provided more than $7 million in community grants and more than $2 million in national research grants. 

At their annual reception on March 25, 2009, Komen Charlotte proudly presented their “Founder’s Award” to the Charlotte Community Health Clinic, a six-time Komen Charlotte grantee offering screening mammography, clinical breast exams and breast healthcare education to underserved and uninsured patients at the clinic. This award honors Komen Charlotte’s founder Penelope Wilson and is presented to the grant recipient who, through their creative spirit, perseverance, passion and community involvement, finds new ways to serve Komen Charlotte’s mission.

Nancy Hudson, executive director of the Charlotte Community Health Clinic remarked, “Komen Charlotte has been a great friend to those in our community who are low-income and uninsured. Through the grant funding from Komen Charlotte, the Charlotte Community Health Clinic has not only changed lives but saved lives through early detection of breast cancer. We thank Komen Charlotte for being a wonderful partner and enabling us to provide quality healthcare to our patients.”

Following is a summary of the 2009 grants provided by the Charlotte Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure:

Boat People, SOS – Mecklenburg County
The “Health Awareness Program for Immigrants” pledges to raise awareness and increase the breast cancer screening rate among Vietnamese women of Greater Charlotte, North Carolina.

Cabarrus Health Alliance – Cabarrus County
The “Breast Health Outreach and Advocacy” program provides outreach, education and screening services targeting low income women, particularly minority women in Cabarrus County.

Cancer Services of Gaston County – Gaston County
 “Project PINK” promotes education, early detection, and awareness of breast cancer as well as reduces the cost of treatment for uninsured/underinsured breast cancer patients in Gaston and Lincoln counties.

Carolinas Medical Center -NorthEast, Inc. – Cabarrus County
CMC-NorthEast’s “Breast Health Program” provides screening mammograms and diagnostic services, in addition to lymphedema support and services to the uninsured in Cabarrus and neighboring counties. 

Carolinas Rehabilitation - Main – Mecklenburg County
“ACT-UP” provides treatment and compression bandages and garments for women with lymphedema who are otherwise unable to afford them.

CaroMont Cancer Center at Gaston Memorial Hospital – Gaston County
“No Woman Left Behind” provides breast cancer screening and advanced diagnostic services for the underserved and/or disadvantaged women in the community who do not qualify for other means of assistance.

Catawba Care Coalition – York County
The “Breast Cancer Awareness Program” provides outreach, education and screening to HIV positive women, a medically underserved population.

Catawba Service Unit – Indian Health Service – York County
The “Catawba Indian Breast Cancer Prevention Project” provides screening mammograms for the uninsured and provides group breast health and self-exam education for women of the Catawba Indian Nation.

Charlotte Community Health Clinic, Inc. – Mecklenburg County   (2009 Founder’s Award Recipient)
The Charlotte Community Health Clinic has a “Women’s Clinic” that provides screening mammography, clinical breast exams and breast healthcare education to women aged 19 and over at the Health Clinic.
 
Chestnut Grove Community Center – Iredell County
At the “Healing Our Community” annual NAACP Health Fair in October 2009, underserved and/or disadvantaged women can register for a mammogram to be provided at Iredell Memorial Hospital.

C.W. Williams Community Health Center, Inc. – Mecklenburg County
“Mammography Program for the Uninsured” will provide education, screening exams and diagnostic exams to uninsured patients at CW Williams..

Girl Scouts Hornets’ Nest Council – Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, York and Union Counties
“Scouting for the Cure” provides breast cancer health awareness in girls and their families in an educational, non-threatening manner.

Hospice and Palliative Care Charlotte Region – Mecklenburg County
This program ensures all patients with breast cancer have access to the agency’s end-of-life services as well as palliative care services for indigent and underinsured breast cancer patients in the nine-county region.
 
Lake Norman Free Clinic
The “Breast Cancer Screening for the Uninsured” program provides diagnostic mammogram services to uninsured patients at the Clinic, as well as a breast cancer educational component to the Clinic. This program was established to address the increasing health issues of the growing Latino community in North Mecklenburg.

Mecklenburg County Health Department – Mecklenburg County
The “Person-to-Person” program provides culturally sensitive breast health education, screening mammograms and diagnostic procedures to low-income minority women in Mecklenburg County by collaborating with community groups and local agencies.

Presbyterian Buddy Kemp Caring House – Mecklenburg County
The “Treatment Induced Financial Crisis Aid for Patients Diagnosed with Breast Cancer” program provides one-time financial assistance to women who because of their cancer diagnosis are unable to work, pay bills, or pay for medication. Financial assistance recipients must meet eligibility requirements set by the director of the program.

Presbyterian Cancer Center, Mastectomy Recovery Jackets – Mecklenburg County
The “Mastectomy Recovery Jackets for Post-Surgery Breast Cancer Patients” program provides breast cancer recovery garments for women who have the most serious, most invasive breast cancer surgeries, such as bilateral mastectomies or TRAM flaps.  Women with these surgeries have limited range of motion and multiple drainage tubes post-operatively, making it difficult and uncomfortable to wear conventional hospital gowns or clothing.

Presbyterian Cancer Center, Rehab and Treatment – Mecklenburg County
The “Cancer Rehabilitation and Wellness, Strides to Strength™ and Lymphedema” program provides focused services to breast cancer survivors including fatigue management, lymphedema treatment, scholarships to Strides to Strength program, and referrals to physical therapy, nutrition and other support services.

Presbyterian Cancer Center, Screening – Mecklenburg County
The “Screening, Diagnostic Services, Genetic Testing, and Breast Health Outreach for the Medically Underserved” program provides screening as well as quarterly education outreach to medically underserved women in the community targeted for Latino and African American women. Presbyterian is working with community groups, faith-based institutions and free clinics to identify women for the screenings.

Rowan County Health Department – Rowan County
The “Breast Health Screening Service” program provides screening mammograms for uninsured or underinsured women in Rowan County.

Rowan Regional Medical Center – Rowan County
The “Rowan Regional Breast Cancer Wellness Project” provides low income women who are not insured or under-insured, with state-of-the-art digital mammograms.

Sisters' Network-Carolinas Chapter – Gaston County
“The R.O.S.E. Project” promotes breast health initiatives for African American women in the greater Charlotte metropolitan region..

Stanly Regional Medical Center – Stanly County
“Project CURE” provides breast health education and screening to underinsured/uninsured women in Stanly County.
 
Union County Health Department – Union County
The “About Breast Cancer (ABC) Project” provides breast health services to uninsured or underinsured women of Union County.
