Flat Branch Nature Preserve

Master Plan was approved by the Board Of County Commissioners on august 4, 2009.

Park and Recreation staff would like acknowledge all of the citizens who participated in the community input process for the development of this master plan. Thank you for your commitment to providing outstanding parks and recreational facilities for our community.

Please know that some projects paid for with the 2008 bonds and other bonds are subject to possible delays because of the deteriorating economy and falling tax revenue. Mecklenburg's Board of County Commissioners has agreed to go on a "debt diet" and Commissioners have determined that $20 million of bonds from a 2004 referendum cannot be issued as originally scheduled. This will delay some new parks and greenway projects. County Manager Harry Jones said delays are necessary to reduce unexpected and significant budget gaps.  We will stay in touch and please check this site for all updates on the master plan implementation.

On November 4, 2008 Mecklenburg County voters approved $250 in Park Bond projects.  One of these projects called for the creation of a nature preserve in south Charlotte, at the intersection of Tom Short and Audrey Kell Roads.

The site is one of the largest upland mafic depressions (swamp forests) remaining in Mecklenburg County.  The conceptual plan for the 44-acre preserve is moving forward; and the second community workshop was held in October 2008.  The plan includes a pedestrian access along Tom Short Road, parking, restroom/shelter, and a one mile loop trial with boardwalks and observation decks.  Also included are a natural playground and an outdoor classroom space.
