Conservation Science Specialist, Sudie Daves, uses a drip torch to ignite the edge of a grassland restoration area during a prescribed burn at Cowan's Ford Wildlife Refuge.  Flames can be seen in the background and the crackling sounds are from pockets of fast-burning switchcane.  Click here to view a brief video clip (6.24mB).  Depending on your browser, this may open Internet Explorer, Media Player, or another viewing application.

Nature preserves provide habitat for both common and rare plants and animals, preserve the beauty of Mecklenburg's natural areas and provide sites for educational activities and the observation of wiildlife & natural communities.  Many preserves also offer passive outdoor recreation opportunities compatible with the protection of the natural area.
