Greenway Groundbreaking Ceremony Planned

October 22, 2009

MATTHEWS:  Join the Town of Matthews and Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department as we celebrate the construction of the Four Mile Creek Greenway. This is the first greenway to be located in the Town of Matthews.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the Four Mile Creek Greenway will be held at 10 a.m. on October 31 at Squirrel Lake Park in Matthews. Squirrel Lake Park is located at 1631 Pleasant Plains Road.

Town and County officials will be on hand to move the first shovels of dirt as construction begins for the greenway. Construction is expected to take a year and cost approximately $1.6M.

The greenway will encompass more than two miles of path composed of paved trails, boardwalk, neighborhood entrances and pedestrian bridges. The County will construct the greenway from East John Street to Brenham Lane and from Four Mile Creek north to the former Matthews Public Works Facility. The Town will construct a connector path from this site to South Trade Street to complete the project. The greenway will connect many neighborhoods, Squirrel Lake Park, Matthews Elementary School, Matthews Community Center and will provide alternate access to downtown Matthews.

The public is invited to attend this event.
