SHUFFLETOWN PARK TO GET NEW AMENITIES,EVEN BEFORE IT OPENS, TO SERVE COMMUNITY NEEDS

October 27, 2009

Charlotte, NC—Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department has decided to add amenities to the new Shuffletown Park to serve community needs and encourage wider use by residents of Coulwood and other nearby neighborhoods.  These additional amenities will include:

  • a dog park, because there isn’t one in that part of Charlotte.
  • a walking trail that will incorporate part of the old drag strip on the property to form a trail loop around the park.
  • a playground for children
  • and a sand volleyball court.

The exact size and cost of these amenities is still being worked out.

Shuffletown Park, 9530 Belhaven Boulevard, was first planned as a sports park of about 50 acres to serve the expanding needs for youth athletics in the Coulwood community.  But many residents told Park and Recreation they hoped the park could serve general recreational in needs as well.

Phase I construction, now generally complete, was paid for with $3 million in Park and Recreation bonds approved by voters in 2004.  Phase I includes two baseball fields with a soccer/football field overlaid in the outfields, a restroom and shelter building, and parking.

The new amenities will be added over the winter.  The grand opening of the park is now anticipated for spring (date to be announced), in time for the baseball season.
