Yes, hurricanes can hit the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. On September 22, 1989 Hurricane Hugo unleashed 87 mile and hour winds across our area bringing devastation that required the next 10 months to recover. A Hurricane Watch means that conditions are possible in a specified area, usually within 36 hours. A Hurricane Warning means that a hurricane is expected in a specified area usually within 24 hours.
Once an alert has been issued, take the appropriate actions. Follow the hurricane safety tips, assemble your disaster supply kit and know where to find a current information source.
