Construction of Mecklenburg County's new courthouse and Judicial Center is underway. The first step is to demolish the parking deck that has occupied of the new courthouse, at the corner of 4
th and McDowell Streets in Charlotte's Government District.
The Judicial Center will be comprised of the new courthouse, renovated facilities for criminal justice system agencies and a new parking deck. The new courthouse will consist of 11 floors (including the basement and "penthouse level" for heating/cooling machinery), 568,000 square feet and consist of 34 fully functional courtrooms. An additional five courtrooms will be "shells," ready to be furnished and staffed when the need arrives. A new parking deck will be constructed across McDowell Street, next to the parking deck that currently serves the Sheriff's Office and Mecklenburg County jail facilities.
During construction of the new courthouse and parking deck, alternate parking for
jurors is be available at the Adams Mark Hotel (555 South McDowell Street). Alternate parking for
court employees is at the Adams Mark Hotel and the Four Points Sheraton Hotel (201 South McDowell Street).
Other court visitors are asked to utilize alternate parking in a wide variety of lots, parking decks, and on-street spaces throughout the Government District.
Mecklenburg County Real Estate Services and construction manager F.N. Thompson/Turner Construction/Walter B. Davis are managing the courthouse construction project jointly. Design and planning was conducted by SchenkelShultz/HDR/Kallman McKinnell & Wood, with input from the various agencies that will utilize the new courthouse and Judicial Center.
