The General Assembly has adopted
Session Law 2011-407 setting the districts for the Mecklenburg County Commission.
2011 Redistricting
Following the decennial census, local governments with district representation must redraw their electoral districts if there is a significant difference in the populations of those districts.
The Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners began the redistricting process by appointing a nine member
citizen advisory board which, based on guidance provided by the board, recommended several plans for the board’s consideration.
The Board instructed the committee to consider these factors in recommending a plan:
- Precincts should be kept whole
- Two districts should be minority-majority
- Three districts should likely elect a Republican and three likely to elect a Democrat
- Do not split towns
- Work with the Board of Education to draw co-terminus districts
