Why Breastfeed

WIC Healthy Habits, Healthy FamilesHuman milk protects babies in a way that formula cannot. Babies who are breastfed are less likely to suffer from respiratory and ear infections, allergies, diabetes, obesity and childhood cancers. Breastfeeding is also good for mom! Mothers who breastfeed have lower rates of osteoporosis, breast and ovarian cancers and increased postpartum weight loss.

The Mecklenburg County Health Department’s Women, Infants & Children (WIC) program supports nursing mothers! Here’s how:

  • WIC staff offer breastfeeding education and support to all pregnant and breastfeeding clients
  • Free childbirth and breastfeeding classes are available to clients
  • Electric Pump Loan Program is available for parents of premature or sick babies
  • The “Warm Line” (704-336-6464) is available for help with breastfeeding questions and concerns
  • Loving Support Peer Counselors are available for support, the counselors are women who have successfully breastfed their babies and are available to help others
