What is a weekender inmate?
A weekender inmate is a person who has been sentenced in court to serve active time in jail. A Judge will order the sentence to be served on weekends. By definition a weekender is someone who reports to jail on their own, is released then reports back again until the time is completely served. The dates and times to report are scheduled by the courts and must be served as ordered by the Judge.
Serving time as a weekender is considered a privilege and should be treated as such. The weekender program enables people who the courts view as low risk, to serve their court ordered sentence while maintaining their local employment to help keep them a functioning member of our community. It also helps keep families together without the hardships of missing family members for a long period of time.
Where to report?
If you are ordered to start weekends on Fridays, you are to report to the Direct Report in Center located at Jail Central on McDowell St. across from the Government Parking Plaza.
If you are ordered to serve weekends any other day of the week, you are to report in to the main jail front lobby on 4 th st. and advise the lobby Officers that you are reporting in to serve your time.
What to expect?
After you check in with an Officer at either report in location, you will be greeted by a booking Officer. The Officer will escort you into the facility where you will be searched for contraband. You will also be subject to alcohol testing. The booking Officer will discuss the length of your stay and answer any questions you may have.
You will be finger printed and screened for medical conditions. The next steps will include submitting any cash you may have into a personal account with our finance division (this is a cashless jail system). You then will hand over all personal items such as shoes, belts, wallets, jewelry and clothing to be inventoried and secured by the property division, until your release. The weekenders are then dressed out in an inmate uniform and given their jail issued items.
If for any reason you require medical attention, the medical staff will ensure your medical needs are addressed.
The weekender inmates will be escorted into their housing unit or POD, where they will be spending their time. The POD Officers will address the inmates with rules and regulations of the facility.
Direct Report in Center
If you are scheduled to report in on Fridays, you will be housed in the new weekender unit. It is a 110 bed facility specifically used to house weekenders.
A weekender may volunteer to participate in the work brigade crew. The weekenders get the opportunity to work with the Work Crew and assist in a multitude of tasks including park clean ups, outside maintenance and vehicle detailing. This is designed to help Mecklenburg County reduce labor costs to the tax payers and lets the inmates give back to their community.
During the weekenders stay, they will have their assigned bed, cable television and some constructive activities to participate in. They will receive 3 square meals a day and use of the inmate telephone system. (All phone calls will go out as a collect call to a land line only)
