Business property listings are sent to owners on record the previous year by the Mecklenburg Tax Assessor’s Office every December. Listings are to be filed by January 31 and a penalty is added for listings filed after that. However, extensions filed before the January 31 deadline allow property owners an extension to April 15 and due to that date falling on Sunday, extensions are actually due on April 16. Business property owners should not confuse the IRS income tax extension to April 17 with the due date for filing their property listings.
The assessor’s office has made the process of filing and tracking business property tax listing easier this year by offering
TAXScribe, an online tool that business owners and tax preparers and accountants can use to complete the listing process. Businesses that filed extensions using TAXScribe will be able to file their listing electronically in TAXScribe through Tuesday, May 15.
It is the responsibility of the taxpayer to obtain paper forms from the Assessor’s Office Account Services Division for any business which they have not received a tax form in the mail. Forms may be obtained by calling the office at 704-336-6382, visiting the offices at 700 East Stonewall Street, Suite 103, or printing the online form.
