PARK AND REC'S WINTER GET GOING GUIDE NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE
The winter issue of Park and Recreation’s Get Going Guide is now available online. The issue covers programs and events happening in December, January and February as well as a complete listing of holiday activities. For the first time since moving to an online-only publication, the guide is also available in flip book format.
SANTA SET TO VISIT THE 5TH ANNUAL REEDY CREEK HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department invites the public to the 5th Annual Holiday Open House on Saturday, Dec. 10 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The festivities will take place at Reedy Creek Nature Center, 2900 Rocky River Road. The FREE celebration will feature green gift ideas, crafts, activities, refreshments, naturalist led hikes, and of course Santa!

OUR CHILDREN'S MEMORIAL WALKWAY HOLDS LUMINARY SERVICE
Our Children's Memorial Walkway Inc. invites anyone grieving the loss of a loved one to a special Christmas Luminary Service at Our Children's Memorial Walkway and Garden in
Frazier Park on Dec. 17 at 5:30 p.m. The service will honor loved ones who have died at any age. Guests will be able to purchase luminaries for $10. To order, send the name of the person you would like to honor and a check payable to OCMW Inc. to OCMW P. O Box 44153 Charlotte, NC. 28215. In the event of rain, the service will be canceled and the gift will go toward garden maintenance. Our Children’s Memorial Walkway has more than 1200 engraved bricks, 13 benches, and several statues along with beautiful trees and plants. Anyone can “Adopt a Brick” in memory of a loved one or friend. Our Children’s Memorial Walkway is a 501(c)(3) corporation. For more information, visit

EAT AT CHICK-FIL-A AND HELP SUPPORT ThERAPEUTIC RECREATION'S SUMMER SCHOLARSHIP FUND
The
Therapeutic Recreation Section invites the public to “Spirit Night” at the Chick-fil-A on East Woodlawn Road on Thursday, Dec. 8, from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. The event will serve as a fundraiser for the TR Summer Scholarship Fund. Guests who make a purchase during the event and present
this flyer or mention “Therapeutic Recreation” will have 10% of their purchase donated to the scholarship fund. The Therapeutic Recreation Section provides services for individuals with disabilities to help ensure inclusive opportunities in all program services and accessibility at all Department parks, facilities, special events and classes.
GRANT FUNDED PROGRAM TEACHES RESIDENTS ABOUT FOOD AND NUTRITION Service BENEFITS
Begining in January,
Mecklenburg County Cooperative Extension will begin offering a new initative called
More in My Basket. The program a grant project funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the NC Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The focus of the More in My Basket program is to inform the public about the advantages of enrolling in Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) benefits (i.e., food stamps, EBT cards) and the enrollment process itself. A key component of the program is to address incorrect or outdated information about FNS. Agents and volunteers will provide information in three formats: one-hour group presentations, one-on-one appointments or booth presentations at local events. E-PLANT TIP FOR DECEMBER FROM THE nc cOOPERATIVE eXTENSION pROGRAM
- Chickweed and other broadleaf weeds are continuing to grow and mature. A liquid broadleaf herbicide can be used if the day time temperature is warm enough. Consult the pesticide label on the product before applying.
- Move house plants away from air vents so they are not exposed to prolonged forced air. Constant air flowing over foliage will desiccate plants very quickly.
- Remove dead, diseased, and wind-damaged branches on trees and shrubs.
