NATURE PRESERVES AND NATURAL RESOURCES DIVISION NOW ACCEPTING ORDERS FOR 2ND ANNUAL PLANT SALE
The Nature Preserves and Natural Resources Division and MeckTeens are accepting pre-orders through March 29 for their 2nd annual plant sale benefiting youth outdoor programs.
Plants and vegetables are $2 and include:

Reedy Creek Nature Center. Plants will be available April 8-12. The public sale will take place at Yorkmont Farmer's Market, 1801 Yorkmont Road, on April 13 and 20, from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
VOLUNTEER-BUILT PLAYGROUND TO HONOR VICTIMS OF NEWTOWN SCHOOL SHOOTING
Park and Recreation will honor the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn., with a playground built by volunteers and inspired by children. The department will work with New York-based architectural firm Leathers & Associates – the same company that designed Race Playce located in Nevin Park – on a design for the playground, which will be constructed in
Park Road Park, 6220 Park Road. As part of the design process, the firm will seek the ideas and suggestions of local school children on what they would like included in the playground. “This project is about bringing the community together to remember those lost in Newtown,” said Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Director Jim Garges. “What better way to remember the 26 students and teachers than a playground designed and inspired by children.” Construction of the playground will begin in spring 2013 and will take about four or five days to complete. Hundreds of volunteers are expected to help with the playground build. The project is expected to cost about $250,000. The department has secured $100,000 in Park and Recreation bond money; the rest will be sought through private donations.

Park and Recreation will collect donations for the project through Partners for Parks, a nonprofit, nonpartisan support group that seeks to promote and enhance parks, greenways, and open space throughout Mecklenburg County. Donations can be made at

KOREAN SENIOR CENTER HOLDS KOREAN MASK DINNER THEATER FEB. 24
No need to travel across the globe to experience the Asian culture. The Korean Senior Center will present the first Korean Mask Dinner Theater at

SERVING UP YOUTH TENNIS LESSONS
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation is teaming with Serve It Up Tennis Academy to provide children ages 5-10 an opportunity to receive tennis instruction from certified tennis professionals. The program will last eight weeks and will be hosted by two recreation centers in the county.
Elon Recreation Center will host two classes on Tuesday beginning March 5 at 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and
Berewick Recreation Center will host Sunday sessions beginning March 3 from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The program will cost participants $40 for the entire eight week session. For more information and to register, please log on to

GOLDEN GLOVES BOXING TOURNEY TAKES CENTER STAGE AT SUGAW CREEK REC CENTER
Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department will host the 2013 State Golden Gloves Open and Novice Boxing Championships at
Sugaw Creek Recreation Center on Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9. The tournament will feature both male and female boxers from across North Carolina who are registered with USA Boxing. Admission is $5 for ages 14 and under, $10 for ages 15 and up.
