Bark in the Park Top Dog Festival
ENTER YOUR POOCH FOR TOP DOG HONORS AT THE 2013 BARK IN THE PARK TOP DOG FESTIVAL PRESENTED BY PURINA® AND HARRIS TEETER

Sign-up your dog for this year’s Top Dog Photo Contest, part of the 2013 Bark in the Park Top Dog Festival presented by Purina® and Harris Teeter. The festival is a signature event of the Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department to promote dog parks and will take place on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at Rural Hill, 4431 Neck Rd. in Huntersville. Last year, more than 50 photos were submitted. The winner was a two year old male Boxer named Cooper. The entry period this year runs March 8- March 24. Online registration is preferred with the entry fee of $15 payable by Visa or Mastercard. You may also register by mail (mail to: Top Dog Photo Contest c/o Katie Robinson, Tom Sykes Recreation Center, 1501 Euclid Ave., Charlotte, NC 28203). When you submit your entry, email the photo along with your name, address, phone number, your dog’s name, age and breed, and payment receipt number to topdogphotocontest@gmail.com. Judges will select three finalist photos for cleverness and originality. Finalists will be posted on www.parkandrec.com for online voting, April 1- April 14. The Top Dog winner will be announced at Bark in the Park. The Top Dog and owner will receive a year’s supply of dog food from Purina worth $299.98.

COMMUNITY MEETINGS SET FOR MECKLENBURG COUNTY SPORTSPLEX AT MATTHEWS

Park and Recreation will hold informational and operational meetings to provide updates on the Mecklenburg County Regional Sportsplex at Matthews. Phase 1 of the Sportsplex is under construction and it is scheduled to open this summer. Staff will update the Mecklenburg County Athletics Advisory Council and anyone from the general public on the plans to host practices, games and tournaments at the facility. The meeting with the Athletics Advisory Council will be held on March 25, at 6 p.m., at the Park and Recreation Administrative Office Building, 5841 Brookshire Blvd. Staff will also solicit any/all weekend tournament request at this meeting. All weekend tournament requests are due by close of business on April 8, 2013. For information on how to submit your weekend tournament request, click here. A tournament director’s meeting will take place in April 2013 and staff will conduct drawings for open dates for weekend tournaments. Phase 1, which includes five synthetic multi-purpose athletic fields, is scheduled to be substantially completed by July 2013 with the grand opening planned in September 2013. Fields will be available for weekend tournament play beginning September 6-8, 2013.

When completed, the facility will house 12 multi-use fields capable of hosting events such as soccer, lacrosse, football and rugby as well as a championship stadium with seating. To view a rendering of the complex, click this link.

egg huntRAY'S SPLASH PLANET HOLDS UNDERWATER EGG HUNT
 Join us March 28 as Ray's celebrates its 9th Annual Easter Egg Hunt in the WATER!!! Kids will jump in and explore the water to find as many Easter eggs as possible. Please bring a (waterproof) basket. Pictures will be available with the Easter Bunny, so remember to bring your camera. Children will be separated into different age groups.

Admission: $6 per child (Mecklenburg County), $8 outside the County.

FREE COMPOSTING CLASSES OFFERED THIS SPRING

Learn the how’s and why’s of home composting, proper soil preparation and management, mulching, and grasscycling. Participants will take home a free wire compost bin and a booklet on home composting. (Maximum 20 students per class) Register Here
