Horticulture

Gardening is considered our nation's most popular pastime, yielding fresh fruits and vegetables for the dinner table, a cleaner environment and aesthetically pleasing landscapes. North Carolina Cooperative Extension helps gardeners learn more about new plants, native plants and environmental stewardship.

In Mecklenburg County, Cooperative Extension provides community education and assistance in the areas of consumer and commercial horticulture.  These areas include:

  • Fruit and vegetable production
  • Landscape and turf grass management
  • Community gardens
  • Master gardener training
  • Commercial pesticide training, licensing and recertification
  • Home horticulture questions.

For more information on horticulture programs offered through Mecklenburg County Cooperative Extension, contact Steven Capobianco at steven_capobianco@ncsu.edu.

Master Gardener volunteers are part of the volunteer staff of NC State University's Cooperative Extension Service. They are members of the local community who take an active interest in their lawns, trees, shrubs, and gardens. They provide unbiased, research based educational assistance and programs in horticulture and environmental issues to the gardening public.
