Charlotte, NC-- Carolina Kayak Polo Club hosts the fourth annual Carolina Spring Regional Tournament for Kayak Polo at McDowell Nature Preserve, 15222 York Road Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3, 2009. This event is presented on Lake Wylie in partnership with Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department.
Five teams are expected to compete for the championship with 30 to 40 players expected from across eastern North America. Participants are expected from New England, Montreal, New York, and Maryland as well as from both Carolinas.
Kayak Polo is an exciting, fast moving team game with two suspended goals at each end of the playing area in a pool or lake. Five players in kayaks from each team try to out-score each other. They move the ball by passing or “dribbling.” They use their paddles to control the ball and block shots. The game is like basketball or soccer, except played in boats! Kayak Polo is a great workout and a mixture of boat, paddle and ball-handling skills.
Tournament games will run from 2pm until dusk on Saturday. Play on Sunday runs 8am-1pm. Spectators are invited to watch the tournament beside the waterfront dock. This event is FREE for spectators
