McDowell Creek Greenway Grand Opening

Charlotte, NC-- Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department holds a ceremony to open officially the McDowell Creek Greenway at 10am on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at the entrance to the greenway, off Townley Road in Huntersville, at Birkdale Village.

The first section of this greenway runs 1.5 miles along McDowell Creek, and has several distinctive characteristics:
  • The first greenway in Cornelius
  • The first greenway to connect two Mecklenburg towns, Huntersville and Cornelius.
  • A new link from homes and apartments to retail and entertainment properties at Birkdale Village.
  • A future link to the planned Robbins Park and Westmoreland Athletic Complex.

This first section of the greenway runs through beautiful fields, woods, wet meadows and floodplains. Residents are encouraged to bring bikes to the ceremony and join for a ride/walk between Sam Furr Road and Westmoreland Road.

McDowell Creek Greenway was primarily funded with $830,000 in Park and Recreation bonds approved by voters in 2004. An additional $170,000 came from an NC Transportation grant and a contribution from Cornelius. Total cost was about $1,000,000.

Speakers invited to make brief remarks at the ceremony include: Mecklenburg County Commission Chairman Jennifer Roberts, Mecklenburg Park and Recreation Commissioner and Cornelius Mayor Jeff Tarte, Huntersville Mayor Jill Swain, Mecklenburg Park and Recreation Director Jim Garges, Huntersville Parks & Recreation Director Michael Jaycocks, and Cornelius Director of PARC Paul Herbert.
