Park and Recreation invites seniors, age 55 or better, to register now through March 23 for fun and fitness in the 2012 Charlotte Mecklenburg Senior Games, April 16 through May 26. This is a qualifying year for the 2013 National Senior Games.
Charlotte, NC- Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department invites seniors, age 55 or better, to register now through March 23 for the 2012 Charlotte Mecklenburg Senior Games, April 16 through May 26. This is a qualifying year for the 2013 National Senior Games.

Senior Games athletic events include swimming, golf, tennis, 3 on 3 basketball, racquetball, badminton, track and field, croquet, football throw, spin casting, basketball shoot, softball throw, bowling, table tennis, billiards, archery, bocce, horseshoes and shuffleboard. They also feature non-athletic events such as visual and performing arts: basket weaving, china painting, crocheting, rugs, jewelry, knitting, needlework, pottery, quilting, stained glass, tatting and needle lace, tole/decorative painting, weaving, woodcarving, woodworking, woodturning, ceramics, acrylics, drawing, mixed media, oil, pastels, photography, sculptures, water color, essays, life experiences, poems, short stories, comedy/drama, dance, instrumental, vocal, cheerleading and line dancing.

New for 2012: cornhole (competition) and pickleball (demonstration sport).

Last year Senior Games in Charlotte-Mecklenburg drew 300 participants. More than 100 advanced to the State Games in Raleigh and 22 made it to the National Games (held every other year) in Houston. This year the Games seek even more! Mecklenburg seniors and seniors in surrounding counties are eligible to participate here. Statewide, Senior Games are open to all seniors who live in the North Carolina.

To register, visit www.cmseniorgames.org or ask at any Mecklenburg County Recreation Center. The registration fee is $20 per person (with an additional $10 for bowling and $46.59 for golf). Participants must have lived in North Carolina for three consecutive months.
