CONSERVATION THROUGH EDUCATION
Soil and water are recognized as our basic natural resources. The way we manage these and their products--plants and animals--is important in determining our present and future welfare.
How well we manage our resources does not depend entirely on land owners and operators; we all have a share in conservation.
Mecklenburg Soil and Water Conservation District understands that without the adequate knowledge, these natural resources will quickly diminish.
The annual contests are offered to students that attend an elementary or middle school in Mecklenburg County. The audience for the annual contests is Grades 3-9.
Contests will be conducted on the District, Area and State levels. District First Place winners will be eligible to enter the Area contests, and the Area First Place winners will be eligible to enter the State contest.
A set of five themes have been selected by the NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts' Education Committee and adopted by the NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. These themes rotate on a yearly basis.
The approved theme and rotation schedule is as follows:
2012-2013 Water... The Cycle of Life
2013-2014 The Living Soil
2014-2015 Wetlands are Wonderful
2015-2016 We All Live in a Watershed
2016-2017 Soil & Water... Yours for Life
2014-2015 Contest details will be available September 2014.
