Seventh Annual Runway 5K Run/Walk
 


Despite a fall chill, on Saturday, October 26, the Seventh Annual Runway 5K Run/Walk drew almost 2,000 participants to one of the nation's most unique locations and busiest airports: CLT's airfield. 

The overall winner was Anthony Famiglietti of Davidson with a time of 14 minutes and 28 seconds – 15 seconds faster than last year's winning time. Alice Rogers of Charlotte captured the top spot for females with a time of 17 minutes and 40 seconds. (Click here to view complete race results.)

Race proceeds will once again benefit Race proceeds will benefit LIFESPAN's Community Activity and Employment Transition Program (CAET). 

LIFESPAN is a local a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that transforms the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities by providing education, employment and enrichment opportunities. The CAET program provides training and support necessary for adults with developmental disabilities to gain financial independence, explore opportunities for meaningful work and become engaged within their own communities. More than a dozen LIFESPAN participants currently work at CLT, mainly as restroom attendants.

Registration
It isn't too early to mark your calendar for next year's Runway 5K, which will be hosted on Saturday, October 25. Come back during the summer of 2014 for the Eighth Annual Runway 5K registration information.

Entry fees are non-refundable. Non-competing children ages 7 and under are free and must be accompanied by an adult.

Pre-registered participants (both runners and walkers) will receive t-shirts during the week of the run when picking up packets.


Awards
Special guest and Charlotte Bobcats point guard Kemba Walker was on hand to present awards for the Seventh Annual Runway 5K in the following categories:

Top 3 Overall Male/Female
Top 3 Teams
Top 3 Male/Female Baby Joggers
Top 3 Male/Female in each age group: 7 and under, 8 – 10, 11 – 14, 15 – 19, 20 – 24, 25 – 29, 30 – 34, 35 – 39, 40 – 44, 45 – 49, 50 – 54, 55 – 59, 60 – 64, 65 – 69, 70 and up.


Event Details
The Runway 5K Run is a certified run that takes place on a smooth, flat surface at one of the nation's most unique locations and busiest airports. A portion of the race course is on one of the Airport's taxiways and provides up close and exciting views of planes landing and taking off, the terminal complex and a scenic view of the Uptown Charlotte skyline. The course is wheelchair accessible and baby stroller friendly.

All participants (runners and walkers) who pre-register will receive a t-shirt.

Other participants will receive a t-shirt while supplies last.

Please note:
  • For safety reasons and because of the Run's secure location, bikes, rollerblades, inline skates, dogs and/or other pets are not allowed.
  • The course will not be open prior to 8 a.m.
  • All runners and walkers should arrive at least one hour prior to the race start.
  • Be prepared for bags to be inspected.

Race History
Event proceeds benefit LIFESPAN’s Community Activity and Employment Transition Program (CAET). LIFESPAN is a 501(c)(3) that transforms the lives of children and adults with developmental disabilities by providing education, employment and enrichment opportunities. The CAET program provides training and support necessary for adults with developmental disabilities to gain financial independence, explore opportunities for meaningful work and become engaged within their own communities. 

In year's past, local celebrities and athletes have participated in the event including Charlotte Bobcats Kemba Walker, former Carolina Panthers defensive end Mike Rucker and Mrs. North Carolina USA Debbie Miller. The Runway 5K has raised more than $120,000 for the LIFESPAN CAET program since its inception in 2006.
