TSA's Helpful Tips

Arrive early. Current security measures increase time needed to check in. When traveling with young children, infants, elderly or disabled passengers, allow for even more time.

Leave mace, pepper spray and firearms at home. Do not pack fireworks, flammable materials, household cleaners, or pressurized containers. Click here for more information about TSA's Prohibited Items.

Keep your eyes open for unattended packages and bags, and report them to authorities. Watch your bags and don't accept packages from strangers.

Be prepared to answer questions about who packed your bags and whether you might have left them unattended at any time. If you have any doubts, say so.

Do not joke about having a bomb or firearm in your possession. Think before you speak. Belligerent behavior, inappropriate jokes and threats are not tolerated. They can result in delays and possibly missing flight departures. Airport and local law enforcement may be called as necessary.

Do not leave cars unattended in front of the terminal. Curbside parking is not allowed, unattended vehicles may be towed.

Have photo identification and boarding pass available. A valid government issued identification and boarding pass are required for gate access.

Passengers without identification (lost, stolen, etc.), will be required to provide a document checking officer with some information to help verify their identity. Please allow additional time since this slows down the screening process and will result in additional screening.

Children are not required to show identification.

If you are meeting a child requiring assistance at the gate, you must contact your airline in advance to make arrangements for a gate pass.

Please be advised, security checkpoint hours at Charlotte Douglas International Airport are:

A checkpoint: 4 a.m. – 8:15 p.m.
B checkpoint: 4 a.m. – 8:15 p.m.
C checkpoint: 4 am. – 10:45 p.m.
D checkpoint: 5 a.m. – 8:15 p.m.
E checkpoint: 6 a.m. – 10:15 p.m.

Passengers are not allowed beyond security checkpoints once all the checkpoints are closed.

Carry-on Items. All carry-on items must be screened at security checkpoints. Liquids are allowed in carry-on luggage in accordance with the 3-1-1 format. All liquids must be contained in a bottle three ounces or less and placed inside a one quart, clear, plastic, zip-top bag. One bag per passenger is allowed. There are exceptions for baby food/formula as well as items needed for special medical purposes.

Additionally, carry-on and checked bags are subject to being hand-searched by security personnel, especially when contents cannot be determined by X-ray.

Note: Ink and toner cartridges more than 16-ounces in weight are now banned from both carry-on and checked baggage. Click here for more information about TSA's Prohibited Items.

Do not wrap gifts. Security will open packages that may need to be inspected. Passengers should wait until arriving at their final destination to wrap gifts.

Automated Passport Control (APC) Kiosks

To expedite screening of arriving international passengers, 24 self-service kiosks have been installed at CLT. Travelers do not need to pre-register to use the kiosks, which reduce border clearance wait times by as much as 50 percent.

Upon arrival, passengers are directed to the kiosks, follow on-screen instructions to scan their passport, answer declaration questions and verify passenger information before receiving a confirmation receipt. With receipt in hand, passengers proceed to a CBP officer for final processing.

More information about APC kiosks can be found by clicking here.
