Media Update #5


Earlier today, a small fire was reported on a travelator (moving walkway) located on the Concourse E at 4:56 p.m. Emergency crews, including Airport Operations, CFD, MEDIC, CMPD and TSA responded. No injuries were reported. The Airport remained open and operational, although, E Concourse was temporarily closed.
  • Emergency crews cleared the scene at approximately 8:30 p.m.
  • The Fire Department has determined the cause of the fire to be mechanical and confined to the motor of the travelator.
  • The escalator contractor remains on site to make necessary repairs. The moving walkway remains out of service.
  • The Airport has taken appropriate steps to accommodate passengers and implemented its Irregular Operations Plan.
  • At 5:15 p.m. an Emergency Operations Center was opened. It was deactivated at 9:15 p.m. Airport personnel continue to assist passengers throughout the evening.

The Airport remains open and operational. There was an electrical issue with a travelator on Concourse E that led to a small fire at 4:56 p.m.
  • E Concourse reopened at 8:10 p.m.
  • Emergency crews remain on site.

Media Briefing will be held at the Airport at 7:30 p.m. Meet in lower level Baggage Claim, inside D Doors.
The Airport remains open and operational. There was an electrical issue with a travelator on Concourse E that led to a small fire at 4:56 p.m. There were no injuries. A portion of the concourse remains closed.

  • Smoke continues to dissipate.

Media Update #2
Emergency crews have responded to an electrical issue with the travelator on Concourse E. The incident has been contained. No injuries are reported. Passengers are being relocated  from Concourse E from the end of gate E-38 and are being bused to gate E-4 where they are re-entering the terminal.   
  • The emergency call was issued at 4:56 p.m.
  • The remaining gates on E Concourse are resuming normal operations.
  • Approximately 17 of 36 gates on E Concourse are out of service as emergency crews work to clear the smoke.  
  • The Airport has bussed approximately 150 passengers from five aircrafts.
  • Emergency crews responding include Airport Operations, CFD, MEDIC, CMPD, TSA.
