Public Comment Sought on the Justice Assistance Grant program

The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County are receiving $940,519 in funding from the U.S. Department of Justice under its Justice Assistance Grant program. The City of Charlotte's share of the funds is $696,931.  The funds are to be used for improvements in law enforcement.  The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department proposes to use the funds in the following manner:

  • $214,475 for overtime for police officers to address defined crime problems in their assigned neighborhoods
  • $219,496 to purchase two additional Sky Watch towers to be deployed at special events, in shopping mall parking lots, etc.
  • $125,000 to expand youth programs in the Police Activities League and Right Moves for Youth
  • $110,960 for technology improvements for the Crime Analysis Division to help analysts more rapidly identify emerging crime trends

CMPD will accept public comments on the proposed use of the funds for a thirty-day period.  Please direct any questions or comments to Darrellyn Kiser, Assistant to the Chief, at dkiser@cmpd.org.
