Eastway Division officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have arrested Robert Jay Harris, DOB: 03/30/1994, for his involvement in an armed robbery. On Thursday, June 5, 2014, at approximately 11:30 p.m., patrol officers were dispatched to an armed robbery call for service at the corner of Commonwealth and Thomas Avenues.
The victim stated he got into his car after shopping at a supermarket when the suspect entered the front passenger side door of the victim’s car and demanded his property at gunpoint. The suspect left the area on foot and began to head in the direction of Central Avenue. The victim flagged down an officer who was working off duty in the area. The off duty officer broadcast the information of the incident over the radio which included the description of the suspect.
A short time later patrol officers observed an individual matching the suspect’s description behind a building on Central Avenue. The victim was transported to the location and he postively identified Robert Jay Harris as the man who robbed him.
Officers also searched where they encountered the suspect and recovered the handgun used in the robbery. Officers determined that the weapon was stolen in Charlotte on May 30, 2014. Harris has been charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, possesion of a stolen firearm, possesion of firearm by felon.
Excellent communication between the off duty officer and patrol officers coupled with solid field work led to the quick arrest of an armed and dangerous suspect.
