Contact: Rob Tufano, CMPD Public Affairs Office

Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Cold Case Homicide Unit have charged Arthur Blake, DOB: 11/11/1956, for his involvement in the 1985 death of Tony Baucom, DOB: 07/03/1943.
On April 26, 1985, Charlotte Officers responded to 1721 E. 7th Street in reference to a working apartment fire.  Once the fire was controlled, Mr. Baucom was located deceased inside of an apartment due to the injuries sustained in the fire.  During the 1985 investigation conducted by the Charlotte Police Department, the Charlotte Fire Department, ATF and SBI, no suspect was identified.
In March 2014, Detectives with the CMPD Cold Case Homicide Unit received information from Chief Fire Investigator Paul Wilkinson with the CFD Arson Task Force which led detectives to re-open the investigation.  After interviewing several key witnesses in the case and working closely with the Mecklenburg County District Attorney’s Office, warrants were obtained for Murder and 1st Degree Arson.
The Violent Criminal Apprehension Team located and arrested Mr. Blake at the 3100 block of Creighton Drive without incident earlier this morning.  Mr. Blake was then transported to police headquarters where he was interviewed by detectives.  At the completion of the interviews he was then transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office where he remains in custody.  Mr. Blake has been charged with Murder and 1st Degree Arson.
CMPD Homicide Cold Case Unit has reviewed 140 cases since it was formed in 2003.  This is the 39th cold case that has been cleared by the unit.  Out of the 39 cases cleared, 24 of those cases have been cleared by arrest.  For additional information, please reference CMPD complaint number 850426023700.
