On Tuesday, April 8, 2014, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the Mecklenburg County Community Support Services hosted the “Do the Write Thing” ceremony. This event recognizing fifty middle school students for their essays submitted for the 2014 Do the Write Thing Essay Challenge. One male and one female student were selected to go to Washington, D.C. to represent Mecklenburg County in the national “Do the Write Thing Essay Challenge” to be held this summer. The challenge gives middle school students an opportunity to examine the impact of youth violence on their lives. Through classroom discussions and writings, students communicate what they think should be done to reduce youth violence. In addition, they make personal commitments to do something about the problem.
