Lt. Steve Huber and (Ret) Major Andy Leonard

On Saturday, November 23, 2013, retired Major Andy Leonard and Lt. Steve Huber with the CMPD attended the UNC vs. Old Dominion football game in Chapel Hill.  They were approached by a woman asking them to assist an older gentleman lying down on the sidewalk. It appeared he was not breathing. There were a number of people around but no one was taking any action.

Steve and Andy immediately asked if the people around the gentlemen knew CPR. No one did. Steve and Andy checked for breathing and a pulse and after finding neither, began communicating that they were going to perform CPR.

The two performed CPR until the man was breathing and had a pulse. His breathing stopped again and he had no pulse. Steve and Andy continued CPR until Chapel Hill Fire and then EMS arrived on the scene and used a defibrillator on the gentlemen.

After several minutes, the man was transported by EMS. A few days later, Steve and Andy were notified by a sergeant who was on scene that the gentleman was still in the hospital in critical condition, but was alive. The action of them performing CPR saved the man's life.

Due to the quick action and willingness to perform CPR, Steve and Andy saved a man's life. They performed as they were trained without hesitation.
