Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Robbery Unit Detectives, along with Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit, have charged Cephas L. Williams, Jr., DOB: 11/24/1964, for his involvement in the attempted robbery of the State Employees Credit Union.
On Tuesday, December 10, 2013, at approximately 10:47 a.m., Mr. Williams entered the State Employees Credit Union, located at 901 North Wendover Road and handed a note to the teller demanding money. Mr. Williams then fled the bank before receiving any money.
On Monday, December 30, 2013, a Crime Stoppers tip was received that gave pertinent information to detectives, leading them to identify Mr. Williams as the suspect in the attempted robbery. Detectives also learned that Mr. Williams had several outstanding warrants out of Gaston County.
On Tuesday, December 31, 2013, the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team located and arrested Mr. Williams for the outstanding warrants on Lockmont Drive and transported him to police headquarters to be interviewed. Mr. Williams was then interviewed by Robbery Unit Detectives where he admitted to attempting to rob the State Employees Credit Union. Mr. Williams was charged with Attempted Common Law Robbery and transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office where he is currently in custody.
Thanks to an alert citizen who contacted police and collaboration between Armed Robbery Detectives, Major Crimes Unit Detectives and the FBI Safe Streets Task Force. Mr. Williams was quickly identified, located and taken into custody without incident.
