City of Charlotte to Receive Justice Assistance Grant

The City of Charlotte will receive $529,135 in funds from the United States Department of Justice under its Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program.  The funds are to be used for law enforcement purposes.
The City is required to share a portion of the funds with Mecklenburg County so 25% of the funds ($132,284) will be given to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
The remaining $396,851 will go to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department which plans to use the funds for three purposes:

–        Overtime for problem solving activities in the patrol divisions
–        Salaries for staff for the Police Activities League’s after school and summer camp programs
–        Salaries for 11 police cadet positions

The public has a 30 day opportunity to comment on the proposed use of the funds prior to the application being finalized.  Comments or questions may be directed to Darrellyn Kiser at dkiser@cmpd.org

Chief Rodney Monroe attended the Do the Write Thing Essay Challenge on Tuesday, April 24.

Thirty-four middle school students were recognized for their essays submitted for the 2012 Do the Write Thing Essay Challenge. Participating principals and teachers from 18 schools were also in attendance at the annual reception to congratulate the winners and their families.

The challenge gives middle school students an opportunity to examine the impact of youth violence on their lives. Through classroom discussions and writings, students communicate what they think should be done to reduce youth violence. In addition, they make personal commitments to do something about the problem. Chief Monroe was honored to take part in recognizing these young members of our community.

The local effort is spearheaded by Mecklenburg County Community Support Services Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federally funded program working to keep our communities safe by eliminating gun violence. Administered by the U.S. Attorney's office, Project Safe Neighborhoods’ task force is made up of members of state and local law enforcement, community groups, educational institutions and Mecklenburg County.

For additional information on the effects of gun violence in our community, please contact Project Safe Neighborhoods at 704-336-8630.
