The CMPD has a long history of excellence borne out of a commitment to making Charlotte one of the safest large cities in the United States . You will not find a police department with more pride, more talent or more integrity. We invite you to experience what we do – and the difference you can make as a member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The men and women of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department proudly serve more than 750,000 residents in the 21st largest city in the country.  While our community is diverse — different socio-economic, religious, political and ethnic backgrounds – the residents all demand excellence from our officers.  We demand the same of ourselves.

  Recruitment
The Recruiting Section is responsible for the processing and selection of all new Police Officers for our agency. The Recruiting Staff, under the supervision of Captain Gerald Smith, processes more than 1,200 applications each year. Each application considered takes approximately twelve weeks to complete. Please direct any e-mail questions to  Recruitment Staff.

Training
The Recruit Training Unit is coordinated by a Sergeant and two officers. Instructors are drawn from a bank of more than 120 officers and civilians assigned in different divisions throughout the department.

Over the last 30 years, the quality and duration of training has increased a great deal.  Currently, the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program lasts 22 weeks and consists of 903 hours of training. This is a great deal more than the 604 hours the State of North Carolina requires. The curriculum includes topics such as Cultural Diversity, Effective Communication and Computer Proficiency, in addition to the traditional law enforcement training that they receive. Please direct any e-mail questions to the Training Staff.
