Youth Involvement
We have a deep appreciation for youth oriented groups being interested in helping our animals. Unfortunately, no children under the age of 18 are able to handle the animals but they can still help in many other ways that creates a huge impact.

We are constantly in need of supplies at the shelter which includes:

  • Kuranda Cots for cats and dogs
  • Newspapers
  • Plastic grocery bags
  • New or used blankets, towels, and wash rags
  • Toys and treats
  • New or used pillow cases (no holes)
  • Dog and cat canned food as well as baby animal milk replacement
  • Exotic animal food (parrot, small birds, ferret, frog, guinea pig, rabbit, iguana, hamster, rat, gerbil)
  • Food/water bowls
  • Heating pads

DOG HOUSES

Often times our Animal Control Officers come across dog owners who don’t realize the laws and ordinances regarding proper pet containment and provisions for dogs who live outside.  We educate these owners on the proper needs their dog. One of the most important needs is proper shelter. Sometimes owners simply can’t afford even the most basic shelter.

It’s our mission to bring them into compliance rather than forcing them to owner surrender their dog. When we have an inventory of donated dog houses we will supply them one. Once they receive the dog house, we will have follow-up visits to ensure they are staying in compliance with our ordinances and providing the proper care for their dog.

We rely on groups and organizations to help supply us with dog houses for this program.

KERCHIEFS

Children and older youth have indicated that they want to support Animal Care & Control. A project that is always fun for the kids and beneficial to the animals is making kerchiefs for the dogs participating at the off-site adoption events. These kerchiefs make the dogs look stylish and attract the attention of potential adopters.

Kerchiefs can be made in all sizes: from puppy to the large adults. They can be made in any color, pattern, design that the kids wish to make. It can say things like woof, dog, puppy, happy tails, etc. The dogs will wear these at all of our off-site adoption events, especially at the SouthPark Mall event held on the first Saturday of each month.

Below is a picture of some kerchief samples as well as pictures of our dogs showing them off at an adoption event.
