The 2014 MLK Holiday Parade Set to March in Uptown Charlotte
Annual event celebrates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Charlotte’s annual MLK Holiday Parade will take place on Saturday, January 18, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The parade will march down Tryon Street, beginning at 10th and ending at Stonewall. Over 90 community organizations, marching bands, and step and drill teams will participate. Highlights will include floats with the student winners of the CMS MLK Art and Writing Contests, local performance group and “America’s Got Talent” quarter finalist Inspire the Fire, and “The Band” Marching Unit, an award-winning group from Baltimore, Maryland. Amanda McCoy, the 2013 Miss Black USA, also will appear. The parade Grand Marshals are Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon and Darrell “Bubba” Wallace, Jr., the first African-American to win in a NASCAR national series since 1963.
“We are honored to once again celebrate Dr. King’s many accomplishments by presenting this parade. It is shaping up to be the biggest MLK Holiday Parade ever produced in Charlotte,” shared Cherise B. Johnson, City of Charlotte MLK Holiday Parade Committee Chair. “We are grateful for the support of our many sponsors, including Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Consolidated, Food Lion, Lance Inc., Racing Electronics, Charlotte, Piedmont Natural Gas and Wells Fargo. We also want to thank our media partners, Power 98, V101.9, The Charlotte Post, Old School 105.3, 92.7 and Praise 100.9. We look forward to sharing this wonderful event with the entire Charlotte community.”
